I Give Myself the Present

I give myself the present
for it now makes perfect sense
I didn't want to live here
so I vanished in defence

Denied myself my presence
living for some future day
When home I would return
and there resume my normal way

But now I know I'll never get
the chance to really live
Unless I show up where I am
So these presents I now give:

I give myself let's make new friends
for this I never did
And find the joy within
this sad and separated kid

I give myself belonging to
a group that welcomes me
New friends, new love, new house
for I'm no longer poised to flee

I give myself a place called home
and make the effort now
To fully live this life I've made
and make this silent vow

I give myself I live here now
and this was meant to be
I'm who I am for being here
And set resentment free

I gave myself I'll settle down
and even plant some roots
Content that where I plant my seeds
is where I'll reap my fruits

I give myself love deeply now
with those whom I adore
Now set to take the journey
to a place called ever more

I give myself don't disappear
into some future date
I give myself right here and now
before it is too late

I give myself the present
unwrapped after all these years
I give myself the gift of now
and life beyond my fears!

COMMENTARY:
Perhaps you find yourself in a situation, relationship or even a country that wasn't of your own choosing. Perhaps you've spent all this time in a state of limbo waiting for the time when things can be like they were.

Perhaps, as a result, you've never fully allowed yourself to be here fully, love deeply, or establish a sense of a permanent now.

Regardless of the past, perhaps it's time you simply decided to be right here and now. For nothing else really exists. The past is a memory. The future is a dream. And you waste the days every waking moment you're someplace else.

Give yourself the present.
